Green Deepavali 2019 Project Update

Last year Deepavali on 28-10-2019, “Paathai” Trust in association with “Namadhu Kiramam” celebrated Green Deepavali by planting trees on the banks of the restored water bodies in 2019. We planted ~1560 Trees and on the first anniversary 28-10-2020, ~930 Trees are alive and growing well. I set a realistic target of 50% success rate for this project and very happy with the result of 60% success rate.

Trees Planted ~ 1560

Trees Alive ~ 930

Success Rate = 60%

Some Observations and Lessons Learned in this Project:·

Three Village teams achieved Success rate of above 80%·

Two Village teams performed poorly with the Success rate of below 30%·

Rajalikudikkadu Village Team used an innovative method of drip irrigation using low cost plastic pot and achieved 80% rate·

In many villages, Villagers stole the Tree Protectors·

One Village, the villagers spoiled the grown trees due to local Panchayat election politics which is totally unexpected and atrocious !!!·

For Future Trees Plantation projects, we’ll use steel fencing or Cloth based Tree protectors to avoid stealing·

Will Plan for Miyawaki Mini Forest Projects

My Sincere thanks to “Namadhu Kiramam” Team for their efforts to make Green Deepavali 2019 a successful project.

Special Thanks to Vaduvur, Eda Annavasal and Rajalikudikkadu Teams for achieving 80+% Success.
